On 8 of November, The Ministry of Public Works included in the present Taxi Law, the requirement that part of the Valencian taxi fleet must contain a minimum number of vehicles adapted for people with disabilities. To make it effective, they have requested that those owners who have more than one vehicle have to have at least one taxi adapted for the PRM collective.
It is true that, for many colleagues in the sector, this restructuring of the law can cause more than one headache. As indicated in the Las Provincias newspaper, at least 146 vehicles will be affected by this new regulation, as well as probable layoffs or license sales, if the conditions are not met within the established period.
A step towards awareness
However, we are aware that this measure, more or less rushed and probably with its possible improvements, represents an advance towards the objective of social awareness about the need to make the city equally accessible to all.
It is true that the concerns of the drivers of the taxi union, as shown in the news, are not focused on a refusal that the city of Valencia has more taxis adapted for PRM; instead, they are focusing on the scarcity of resources to reach those requirements.
In spite of everything, we are one step closer to achieving equity for all people regardless of their condition, one step closer to involving all sectors in the challenge of making it possible, one step closer to providing adapted services for people with functional diversity, one step closer to not having to think about changes, but about taking everyone's needs into account.
